This study-unit on Gender Based Violence and Domestic Violence is tailor-made for the Police Force. Topics covered will include definitions and an understanding of Gender Based Violence, Domestic Violence, Intimate Partner Violence and Violence against Women (including Femicide). It will cover the causes of these, and possible means of prevention, including harmful attitudes, behaviours and stereotypes. It will then consider the victims/survivors of these forms of violence and abuse, including children as witnesses, the effects of witnessing domestic violence and how to deal with the child witnesses. So called 'parental alienation' will also be tackled. Skills for Interviewing victims, such as listening, empathy, sensitivity will be taught. Another topic will be a focus on perpetrators, including adolescent perpetrators against parent. Relevant Legislation, national and international, will be covered as well as existing services available and how to refer.
